Methods of Critical Discourse Analysis provides a concise, comprehensible and thoroughly up-to-date introduction to CDA, appropriate for both novice and experienced researchers.
This new edition has been updated throughout, with a new introduction contextualizing the development of the CDA approach, and two entirely new chapters on the 'social actor approach' to CDA and the use of quantitative corpus linguistic methods. This book addresses the recent impact of the ‘knowledge-based economy’ as an economic ‘imaginary’ and as a set of real economic developments on education, and especially higher education in
Europe, including educational strategies and policies such as those of the Bologna process on a European scale. The contributors come from various disciplinary backgrounds (education, history,

Identity, Belonging and Migration
Synopsis: This volume addresses the question of migration in Europe. It is
concerned with the extent to which racism and anti-immigration discourse
has been to some extent normalised and 'democratised' in European and
national political discourses. Mainstream political parties are
espousing increasingly coercive policies and frequently attempting to
legitimate such approaches via nationalist-populist slogans and coded
forms of racism. Identity, Belonging and Migration shows that that
liberalism is not enough to oppose the disparate and diffuse xenophobia
and racism faced by many migrants today and calls for new conceptions of
anti-racism within and beyond the state.

Ruth Wodak untersucht die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Kommunikation und verschiedenen Institutionen und gesellschaftlichen Bereichen. Anwendbare Resultate sind ihr so wichtig wie Theorienbildung.
Schon als Studentin der Linguistik wollte Ruth Wodak in das Verständnis von Sprache mehr einbeziehen als nur eine rein formale Analyse von Sätzen oder Dialogen. Die Entwicklung sprachlichen Verhaltens und sozialer Interaktion über längere Zeiträume schien ihr wichtig und untersuchenswert, ebenso wie das institutionelle Setting, in dem kommuniziert wird, und das Non- und Paraverbale, das alle Äusserungen begleitet. Die Anliegen, die sie seither beschäftigen, sind im Kern in ihrer 1975 als Buch veröffentlichten Dissertation „Sprachverhalten von Angeklagten bei Gericht” angelegt: Sprachverhalten als Ergebnis und Mitproduzent von Machtstrukturen und konkreten gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen und – wie sie ihr wissenschaftliches Anliegen überhaupt formuliert – „die Erforschung des Zusammenhangs zwischen Gesellschaft und Kommunikation, theoretisch und auch angewandt, das heisst mit praktischen Konsequenzen”.
Wodak, seit 1991 ordentliche Professorin für Angewandte Sprachwissenschaft an der Wiener Uni, hat Sprachverhalten in Gruppentherapien untersucht, in Mutter-Tochter-Beziehungen, in politischen Debatten, im Schulunterricht, in Spitälern und Behörden. Mit verschiedenen Teams von Forscherinnen und Forschern hat sie die Verständlichkeit von Gesetzestexten, Hörfunknachrichten und Kundenzeitschriften analysiert und Richtlinien zur Vermeidung sexistischen Sprachgebrauchs verfasst. Seit mehreren Jahren beschäftigt sie sich zunehmend mit den kommunikativen Aspekten von Vorurteilen und Diskriminierung im öffentlichen und privaten Diskurs – anders ausgedrückt: mit sozialen Tabubrüchen in der Politik, den Medien und am Stammtisch – „und mit der Sprache der PolitikerInnen”. Es gibt für die Soziolinguistik kein eng begrenztes Arbeitsgebiet, der oft missbrauchte Terminus „interdisziplinär” hat an Wodaks Institut seine Berechtigung. „Wir haben immer die Fächer Publizistik, Sozialpsychologie, Geschichte, Politologie und andere hinzugezogen, ohne deren Beiträge wir nicht zu unseren spezifischen Ergebnissen kommen würden. Es ist unser Ziel, gemeinsam interdisziplinäre Theorien zu entwickeln, die etwas qualitativ Neues darstellen.”
1996 hat Ruth Wodak einen der beiden ersten Wittgenstein - Preise bekommen. Ihre Absicht war es, mit den Mitteln „Wien zu einem der wichtigsten Zentren der modernen diskursanalytischen Forschung zu machen”. Diesem Ziel ist sie bisher auf mehreren Wegen näher gekommen: „Zum einen ist es mir gelungen, ein weltweites Forschungsnetzwerk in der Thematik Diskurs, Politik Identität aufzubauen” (Projektkooperationen, Advisory Board, Komparative Forschung usw.). Administrativ hilft ihr dabei eine Forschungsprofessur von Herbst 1999 bis Herbst 2002 an der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, wo sie „Teamwork, Forschung, Innovation und beste Arbeitsbedingungen” vorfindet. Die interdisziplinäre Zusammensetzung brachte auch neue Arbeitsfelder und -ergebnisse: Feldforschungen bei EU-Organisationen ermöglichten eine theoretische und empirische Analyse von Diskursen über Arbeitslosigkeit und eine Entschlüsselung der Globalisierungsrhetorik als „notwendige Konstante”, um bestimmte neue Ökonomien politisch zu legitimieren. Dies sei die erste Forschung zum Funktionieren der EU-Gremien im Mikrobereich. Seit dem Regierungswechsel in Österreich im Februar 2000 sieht Ruth Wodak zudem „eine einmalige Situation für unsere Forschung: nämlich die Tatsache, dass unser Forschungsbereich Politische Rhetorik tatsächlich auch gesellschaftlich gefragt ist!”
